One of the main challenges our society faces today is the need to enhance inclusion and equity. Our society is divisive, and, therefore, purposeful action is required to close these gaps that exclude people. For society to survive, there must be a consideration for inclusive practice. This involves understanding the benefits of including all members of the community to the fullest extent. For example, the current COVID-19 pandemic highlights the importance of each worker within our society. Many of these workers give selflessly so others can survive.
Over the past few decades, we have moved from the types of discourse associated with segregation and integration to those that focus on diversity and inclusion. With this shift, we must now ask ourselves whether our society has actually become more inclusive and diverse. Many members of our society would respond positively to this statement, while many others, particularly in underprivileged, underrepresented, and marginalized communities and societal groups, would not. However, one thing is sure: More needs to be done.
When members within our society believe in the exclusion of a specific subset, these same exclusionary values can become part of political and social discussions. Subsequently, we all have a responsibility to develop practices that create an inclusive society. Being proactive means that we should advocate for others and refrain from discriminatory practices. Not doing so will only result in bringing our society into disrepute.
